E3 has just about wrapped up for another year, and I’m a little bit disappointed in the games shown this round. There wasn’t much that really jumped out at me in terms of upcoming titles that I’m excited for. Either way, I figured I’d make a quick post to go over my own personal highlights, opinions, and what games I’ve got my eye on.
Cyberpunk 2077 (Microsoft Presentation)
I’ll admit, I have zero interest in this game at all. It seems like a lot of people are excited for it, and the trailer reveal, along with an appearance from Keanu Reeves, was certainly well done. I’ll have to see some actual gameplay, I think, in order to get invested. The style (futuristic/steampunk) just doesn’t do anything for me, and the protagonist seems extremely generic. Visually, this title looks incredible, but I’m not sure if its for me.
Elden Ring (Microsoft Presentation)
This title is a collaboration between FromSoftware (studio behind Dark Souls) and George R.R. Martin (author of Game of Thrones). This type of game would normally be exactly my cup of tea – but as of right now, it seems to be Xbox/PC only, so unfortunately I wouldn’t have the means to play it.* The trailer was short, and didn’t show much off – it looks to be a typical fantasy-based RPG but you never know. FromSoftware has become one of my favourite studios in the last couple years, so whether I can play it or not, I’ll be looking forward to seeing more information on this title.
*Edit: I was mistaken – apparently this title will release on the PS4. Microsoft just decided not to include that detail because they’re Microsoft.
Ghostwire: Tokyo (Bethesda Presentation)
As loathe as I am to give Bethesda any kind of attention, this game looks really interesting. From the studio that worked on The Evil Within, its probably going to be of the horror variety. Which scares me. But the game looked good. There are obvious supernatural elements, and a mystery to uncover, which is always intriguing. Cautiously optimistic about this one.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo Presentation)
This is the main game I was watching this E3 showcase for – and they did show some gameplay, to be fair, but they also announced that the game was delayed until March 2020. Excuse me while I weep into my 3DS as I fire up New Leaf in the mean time. Real talk though, if this is to avoid a punishing period of crunch for the developers, another year is a small price to pay. I’m happy to wait the extra time if it saves the developer’s sanity. The trailer that they showed looked good – everything was as cute and bright as I expect an Animal Crossing title to be – I can’t wait for this game to drop.
Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Nintendo Presentation)
This one is looking like a must-buy for me. This was one of the first Zelda games I played as a kid, and it was probably my favourite handheld one. This remake looks adorable, and as I never beat the game, I’m looking forward to digging into this one. And stealing from that shop owner again.
Pokemon Sword/Shield (Nintendo Presentation)
Unfortunately, not too much new information on the Pokemon front. Nintendo did show off some gameplay, but I was really hoping they would show off the starter evolutions – no luck. Still looking forward to these games in November.
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel (Nintendo Presentation)
I was weirdly disappointed with this trailer/announcement. I wasn’t a huge fan of Breath of the Wild, and unless they overhaul some of the gameplay aspects, I feel like I’m going to have to pass on this title, which makes me really sad. The trailer was exciting (did anyone else get Fullmetal Alchemist vibes from that monster thing?) and it seems like maybe (possibly) Zelda might be more involved in the actual gameplay, which would be amazing. Overall, I really hope they concentrate on developing a more focused, central narrative for this sequel. And fix the weapon durability system. And Zelda as a playable character? Please?
Anyway, that’s pretty much it for me. What games are you guys looking forward to? What were the highs and lows of E3 for you? Let me know!
