Have You Ever? Gaming Edition!

This tag has been going around lately, so I’ve decided to go ahead and participate – totally not because I’m bored at home in quarantine… I first saw this from Shoot the Rookie, but Michelle @ A Geek Girl’s Guide is the original creator – check it out! Now let’s get to the questions!

Ever rage quit a game?

Many times! Moreso when I was a kid and would get frustrated more easily – I remember ragequitting Super Mario 64, Turok Evolution, Halo… among others. I don’t do this as much anymore, with the exception of when I first played Dark Souls.

Ever earned all achievements in a game?

I’m not as prolific a trophy hunter as some people, but I have before. If I’m having a lot of fun with a game, and know I’m going to be playing it for a while, I’ll usually take a look at the trophy list to see if it seems doable. I have around 8 Platinum Trophies, the most recent one from Persona 5 Royal (which was a lot easier than the vanilla version of Persona 5, thank god).

Ever pulled an all-nighter gaming?

Surprisingly, no. I’ve stayed up really late, til probably 2 or 3 a.m. but never all night.

Ever live streamed your gaming?

Nope! I think I’d be too nervous to stream myself playing. I’d be worried about people judging my playing. I don’t think it’s for me. I enjoy watching other people stream though!

Ever pre-ordered a game?

All the time. I usually buy physical copies, and around where I live, if you don’t pre-order, you don’t get a copy. They sell out stupidly fast. If I want a game day one, I make sure to pre-order. I’ve got Ghost of Tsushima pre-ordered, but I’m not sure how that’s going to work out, or if stores will be open by then…

Ever bought a game and never played it?

Too often unfortunately. The most recent one I can think of is Uncharted 4. I technically did play it for about 2 hours before I dropped it and never picked it up again. I’m not really into shooting games anymore, so I doubt I’ll ever go back to it.

Ever been jumpscared by a horror game?

Too many times. I used to force myself to play horror games, even though they give me mad anxiety and usually nightmares. Here’s my favourite (in a manner of speaking) memories that I have of absolutely bricking it:

Condemned: Criminal Origins: The entire department store “level”, but mostly the area where the mannequins are following you – they pop up behind you, blocking your way several times as you approach the sewer-type section. They don’t attack or do anything, but it scared the living daylights out of me.

Condemned 2: Bloodshot: Being chased by the bear in the cabin. I still hate the developers for making the one “wrong path” that’s just a dead-end hallway with a mirror – so you can watch as the bear lumbers up behind you, knowing that you’re trapped and VERY dead.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly: This Cardiac Arrest™ brought to you by the “Falling Woman” in the Kiryu house. I had forgotten after you defeat her, she can still appear randomly. I went into viewfinder (first person) mode with the camera, right as she screamed and fell directly in front of my face. I damn near quit the game right there.

BioShock: This game has some good, scripted jumpscare moments, where Splicers appear behind you, or you can see their shadows before they disappear, to sneak up on you later. I think the part that scared me most was in the first level, in the medical wing, when you first pick up the shotgun. All the lights go off, and you’re plunged into darkness – a single spotlight shines on you, and you can hear the footsteps of Splicers running around you, but of course, you can’t see them. Once you fend off a wave, the lights come back on. I still dread this part every time I replay the game.

Ever had a set squad for a specific game?

I don’t really play multiplayer games, like Overwatch or Rocket League, so no. In terms of in-game characters, like JRPG’s, where you have choices for party members, I usually have specific characters that are my go-to. For my favourite, Eternal Sonata, I love using Crescendo, Serenade and Falsetto, or March. For Persona 5, my front line is usually Joker, Ryuji, Makoto and Morgana.

Ever bought a game on multiple platforms?

All the time! I have a lot of older games on newer consoles, so I can keep playing them. I’ve bought Majora’s Mask on three separate systems (N64, Nintendo DS, Wii) and that’s only one example.

Ever bought a console for the games specifically?

The only reason I bought the Nintendo Wii was to play The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Though I ended up buying a couple other titles, like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, etc. I never really used the system as much as I do my other ones. Still worth it though – Twilight Princess is still one of my favourite Zelda titles of all time.

So that’s that! Feel free to do the challenge yourself, or just answer in the comments below. Hope everyone’s doing well, staying healthy, and making some progress on those backlogs!
