Are we all still hanging in there? We’re on day I-don’t-know-what of quarantine, and I hope everyone is still (relatively) sane and healthy. I’ve been slacking a bit on blog posts, simply because I’ve had so much time to game! With both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Persona 5 Royal coming out in March, I’ve been pretty much glued to my consoles – and occasionally still doing the work-from-home thing that I’m supposed to be on top of.
These games have kept me busy, and though I won’t have their reviews ready for quite a while, I do plan to write a sort of “First Impressions” bit about each of them. But this post is just to respond to some nominations that I’ve been procrastinating on – the first being from Larissa over at Games (and Other Bits) and the second from Frostilyte at Frostilyte Writes! Here we go!
Part I – Real Neat Blog Award
If you could right now become fluent in any two languages you aren’t already fluent in, what would they be?
Hmm this is a tough one, but probably Spanish and French. I think they would be the most practical for me, living in Canada, but Japanese seems like a good choice as well.
What’s something you really dislike but respect?
I hope no one hates me for saying this, since I don’t actively *dislike* it but, I’ve never gotten into fan-fiction – it’s just never interested me. I have a lot of respect for the people that pour their time into writing fanfics – it’s a great outlet for practice, and honing your own writing skills, but reading it is just not for me.
Is there a dead or inactive website or blog that you miss?
Probably, but not that I can think of off the top of my head.
What would you use to introduce someone to your hobby (what your blog is about) if they have zero prior knowledge about it?
I’d probably just choose a simple, low-risk game with a great story to introduce them to the hobby. Some of my favourite indie games I think would be great for this – games like Journey, Abzu, or What Remains of Edith Finch. Other games I could think of would be The Sims, Minecraft, or Animal Crossing. They have relatively simple controls, low-risk narratives, and engaging gameplay. I think if someone I was trying to get into the hobby enjoyed any of those, then it would be a great gateway into other titles/genres.
What’s your favorite super pretentious sounding color (ex. burgundy, chartreuse, etc.)
It’s gotta be Blood Orange. Aka red.
What’s your favorite recipe?
This is tough because there are so many! The first one that popped into my head was Poor Man’s Pudding, because it’s so simple and you can make it at the last minute; most of the ingredients are stuff you usually have sitting around. It’s a French-Canadian dessert that’s kind of like a small cake/pancake in a caramel sauce, and it’s usually served with a scoop of ice-cream. Check it out!
What’s a post you’re proud of that you wish more people would read?
I have a couple on here that I think I put a lot of work into, but probably either my Ocarina of Time essay – which took quite a bit of research – or my Dark Souls Diaries. I did an entire playthrough of Dark Souls and documented it, as it was my first time using a magic-based character. It was a lot of fun to write! You can check out the first part here.
Part II – Blogger Recognition Award
- Explain your blog’s origin or history.
- Hand out two or more pieces of advice for new bloggers.
History of the Blog
Funny enough, the one-year anniversary of my blog is coming up at the end of April. I started this blog for a couple reasons – the first being that I was dealing with a sort-of writer’s block. I wanted to write, but just couldn’t seem to bring myself to do it. I figured a blog would be a great, low-stress way to have a constant source of motivation for my writing. I made the decision to write about video games, since it’s my primary hobby, and I don’t have a lot of other outlets to talk about gaming – it’s not an interest that a lot of my friends or family share. I like being able to write more detailed reviews, with my personal opinions, which a lot of major outlets tend to avoid. While I don’t necessarily think my writing has improved, it’s currently the only thing I’m motivated to work on in a writing capacity, so I’m happy about that. I wasn’t sure I would maintain this blog, but after almost a year of work, and engaging with other amazing bloggers, I think I’m pretty hooked.
Advice for New Bloggers
I’m probably not the best person to give out advice, but hey, here goes? My number one piece of advice would probably be to just focus on your writing, and let everything else be a second priority. What I mean by this is: don’t get bogged down in the website layouts, graphics, screenshots, followers, readers, etc. If you’re starting a blog to write, then write. The rest will come later. I know it can be frustrating when things don’t look the way you want them to, or you feel like no one is reading all your hard work, but just focus on your own goals first and foremost to get started.
Frostilyte discussed a similar topic in his post, but I don’t recommend you have a writing schedule. This might seem odd, but I’ve never held myself to post on a schedule because I think it puts pressure on yourself to be creative when you may not be feeling it – and this can definitely lead to burnout. I’ve always been of the opinion that blogging should be fun, not a chore. So do whatever you need to do to make sure you’re enjoying it – whether that’s posting once a week, or once a month. As long as your blog is something that you’re happy with, nothing else matters!
Anyway, thanks for reading! I’m going to follow Larissa’s thread and write some questions for my nominee’s to answer – no pressure, as always! – but feel free to add on your own advice for new bloggers as well! My questions are:
- How do you take your coffee? If you don’t drink coffee, what’s your go-to, pick-me-up drink?
- What’s your go-to game since we’ve been in quarantine? (feel free to substitute movie/tv series/book)
- What’s your favourite dinosaur? (sorry, I just watched Jurassic Park)
- What’s a memorable quote (and who said it) from a book/movie/song/video game that you love?
- If you could go back in time and see one artist/band in concert that no longer plays shows anymore (for whatever reason) who would it be?
- Do you have any tattoos? If not, would you ever get one?
- Share a screenshot from a game you’ve been playing recently, and the story behind it! (if this is too annoying, just discuss a game you’ve been enjoying lately)
