Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Which Pokemon Are You?

I’m excited that Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is making a comeback for the Switch generation; I enjoyed the games a lot when I was younger, with their well-developed storylines and interesting characters. And the best part (obviously) is getting to play as a Pokemon! This is one of the few franchises where I didn’t mind procedurally generated dungeons. The new demo for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is available for download now, with its signature (and crucial) Personality Quiz right off the bat. I thought it would be fun to take the quiz, answering honestly, to see which Nature/Pokemon I would get. Since, you know, when the real game drops, I’ll 100% be manipulating the quiz to get the Nature and Pokemon I want! Don’t lie, we all do it. Here are the results!

Just this once.

Question 1: Are you a cheerful personality?

2020012819503500-2A2B87EF65984805F4D71920ECF2C80E

Hah! No. I’m much more of a deadpan, sarcastic person than a cheerful one. This isn’t to say I’m miserable or anything, but I’m definitely not a “bubbly” type of person.

Question 2: You have the day off – what do you do?

2020012819505600-2A2B87EF65984805F4D71920ECF2C80E

I chose “Hang around vacantly” even though that’s not quite true – it’s just the closest I could get to an honest answer. I like to have relaxing days off, because when I’m constantly busy, I feel like I never get a break. After a long work week, I like to have “do nothing” weekends, where I can read, game, or catch up on some shows. I wouldn’t go on a trip, nor would I “Huddle in a corner.” Though, that might be a good way of phrasing “having an on-going existential crisis”. Maybe I should have chosen that one.

Question 3: Do you like groan-inducing puns?

2020012819510500-2A2B87EF65984805F4D71920ECF2C80E

Absolutely – love them. 100%, the best kinds of puns. Dad jokes especially. If I can make someone groan, or roll their eyes at a joke I’ve made, I feel like that’s a job well done.

Question 4: It’s the summer festival! Do you like carnivals?

2020012819511400-2A2B87EF65984805F4D71920ECF2C80E

I do! Even though everything is over-priced, and crowds can be crazy, I love festivals, and carnivals. I love the unique food, fun rides, and games.

Question 5: You notice a wallet on the side of the road…

2020012819512300-2A2B87EF65984805F4D71920ECF2C80E

I would turn it in to the police. It’s the right thing to do, and knowing how aggravating it is to replace all you can lose in a wallet (credit cards, debit cards, licenses, etc.) without even mentioning cash, I would definitely try to get it back to the owner. I hope others would do the same!

Question 6: Do you occasionally consider yourself dull and overly cautious?

2020012819513100-2A2B87EF65984805F4D71920ECF2C80E

Definitely. I’m careful with money (since, you know, I don’t have a lot of it) so I don’t take many vacations, or buy fancy stuff – sometimes, I feel like this makes me boring. I’m more of an introverted person as well, and will occasionally avoid outings that I’m not entirely comfortable with. I worry that I don’t have anything interesting to say in conversations. I feel like this makes me a pretty dull person – it’s something I fret about a lot, actually.

Question 7: You are told there is a treasure on the right side. What do you do?

2020012819514400-2A2B87EF65984805F4D71920ECF2C80E

Nice try, Patches. I mean, what? I’ve been playing too much Dark Souls I think. But this is definitely a trap. Trust no one; I’m not gonna risk being booted down into a pit. I’m heading left.

Question 8: Do others tell you to watch what you say?

2020012819515300-2A2B87EF65984805F4D71920ECF2C80E

This was a bit tricky, because I feel like there are a couple different ways to interpret this. I am often told this, but not necessarily because I’m particularly outspoken or harsh. I have a bad habit of swearing (like, a lot) so that’s where this comes from. I’ve been known to speak up on occasion, when I feel like someone is treating me or a friend rudely, or unfairly, but I don’t seek out conflict. Regardless, I felt like “Yes” was the most honest answer to this one.

Question 9: Do you want to play as a boy, or a girl?

2020012819520100-2A2B87EF65984805F4D71920ECF2C80E

Girl! I identify as female, so that’s what I went with.

Drum roll, please…

Now, Pokemon had some mad knowledge to drop on me – it was honestly a little weird, because it all felt quite accurate. Mystery Dungeon knows me a little too well, I think…

I am definitely a very cynical person. I often worry about being selfish – my friends and family disagree whenever I voice my concerns, but I still worry about my choices being self-serving. I’ve never been called vain or arrogant, however – these are probably the last things I would be. I’m a bit too self-deprecating to come across that way. You lost it a bit there, Pokemon. After yelling at me a bit (I’m not a bad person, I swear…), the game continued.

Cool! I love Torchic, and its final evolution, Blaziken. My entire sense of self-worth definitely wasn’t riding on getting a good Pokemon… Anyway, my “cool and aloof attitude” is spot on – I think this is the appearance I give off, even if that’s not strictly who I am as a person. Overall, I think my personality quiz was pretty accurate. Of course, I immediately made my entire family take the quiz right after – my sister got Charmander, my dad, Eevee, and my mom, Machop. The game then allows you to choose your partner Pokemon, after giving you the option to change your assigned one (I changed my choice to Squirtle, hehe):

    1. Hope you enjoy it! It’s fun to see how the game interprets your answers to some of the silly questions. They also let you change your starter, regardless of what the game tells you it should be!

  1. Will probably sound like an ass for saying it, but I enjoyed the original a lot and have no intention of playing the remaster because of that. I replayed the game 2 years ago and will bust out my DS cartridge if I get the want to play it again. Though it’s cool that a ton of people are going to get into the series now with the re-release. However, the explosion of procedural generated indie games in the last decade and a half somewhat undermines how fresh and original this game felt back when it originally released in…2006?

As for what I got, when I was younger I used to get Charmander and Cubone. In the most recent replay I was given Psyduck which is the unofficial hard mode. For real. Psyduck’s attacks are terrible. You have to play most of the main story with scratch and confusion unless you get a lucky TM. Gen III Psyduck was a scrub tier Pokémon.

    1. I don’t think that’s an unpopular opinion, to be honest! I lost my DS copy years ago, which is part of the reason I’m excited about this one – I’d sort of resigned myself to not playing it ever again. Nostalgia is a huge factor in me choosing to pick it up; I don’t disagree that it’s nothing exceptional by today’s standards.

I have to admit, I never got Psyduck for anything. I think in my original game, I was Squirtle, with Bulbasaur as my partner, but I’m not 100% sure.

      1. You know I hadn’t considered that people might have also lost their old copies of the games. I assume it’ll be close to a 1 to 1 remake…maybe a few minor tweaks. I hope you enjoy it. I’ll be sure to check out a review if you decide to write one.

Yeah it’s…I’m glad I never got saddled with Psyduck as a kid because I probably would have restarted the game. It was certainly not my easiest run through the game hahaha.

      2. I’m planning on reviewing it, so I’ll try to point out any major differences.

Maybe it’s hard to balance all the starters around the game/story, but I can’t believe they included one that is so useless! Maybe that’s the challenge mode? I’m more grateful now that I got my Squirtle!

      3. I’m not entirely sure they balanced much. Multi-hit moves that are normally weak in the source material are potentially lethal 5 hit moves and a ton of Pokemon learned them at low levels (fury swipes, or Beedrill’s pin missile). Those moves could absolutely end a run out of no where and were present from the word go.
